Setting the capture starting point for the CDC Agent on the Tandem (Enscribe/SQLMP)

Setting the capture starting point for the CDC Agent on the Tandem (Enscribe/SQLMP)

    SUMMARY

When creating a new CDC Solution for the HP NonStop (Tandem) machine, the user can choose the starting point of the Agent. This setting tells the Agent from which point to start capturing new changes.

The user can also modify the startPoint of a running solution. Here is a description of the different stages which you can specify or modify the starting point:

NEW SOLUTION - Setting the starting point when designing the SOLUTION

There are three available options in the CDC Solution Wizard (at CDC Service step):1. On first access:
In this case the starting point will be the first change the Agent reads after starting the Solution for the first time.
    2. Master audit trail number
The user can supply the MAT, which is the number of the Master audit trail. The Agent will starting reading changes from there.
    3. Starting timestamp
The Agent will start reading the changes from the first change/event matching the supplied timestamp.
REDEPLOYMENT - Setting the starting point and redeploying the SOLUTION

The user can edit the CDC SOLUTION using the Attunity Studio and modify the starting point. Usually, this is not a step which would be done at production system. You don't want to interrupt the application in production and stop the solution for redeployment.

However, there are times where you may need to redeploy at production or during development/testing.

To perform the change follow these steps:
    1. Make sure you have consumed all of the changes in the Staging Area (if that is required).
    2. Deactivate the Solution.
    3. Open the Solution in the Solution Perspective in the Attunity Studio.
    4. Click on the CDC Service under the Server Configuration.
    5. Set the starting point.
    6. Click on Done and then Deploy.
    7. In the Deployment section click Deploy.
    8. It's recommended to clean up the Staging Area files before activating the Solution.

This is required if you go back in time, since you may get so many duplicate changes, and the "context" field will no longer be in the required order, since old changes will have a "context" field of the current time.

    9. Activate the Solution.

IMPORTANT: Redeploying the Solution will override any settings you have applied on the Agent/Router and Staging workspaces/bindings after the initial deployment.

PRODUCTION TIP - Manually modifying the starting point

During production if going back in time was needed for any reason, for example the Solution was down and some changes were lost, you can follow the following steps:
    1. Make sure you have consumed all of the changes in the Staging Area (if that is required).
    2. Deactivate the Solution.
    3. Use the Studio and make sure you have the following options enabled:

    - Window -> Preferences -> Studio -> MetaData
    - Make sure the "Enable editing source XML" is enabled.

    4. Go to the Design perspective of the Studio and edit the machine where you have the AGENT (Tandem).
    5. Expand the machine and navigate to the Adapters section.
    6. Right-Click on the Agent's Adapter and then "Edit Metadata" or "Show Metadata View" (depending on the version of Studio).
    7. Right-Click on the eventStream interaction and then "View Interaction".
    8. Modify the value of the startPoint, follow these guidelines:

    - TIMESTAMP

The format of the timestamp should be "timestamp:YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SS". For example:

    timestamp:2009-01-27T17:30:00

    - MAT (Master Audit Trail) number

The number of the MAT file where you want the Agent to start reading changes.

Review this article for more information.

    9. Save the changes.
    10. Clean up the Staging Area as explained in the previous section.
    11. Activate the Solution.
IMPORTANT: The expiration Hours setting should be large enough so that you can consume the older changes before the Router starts deleting old events, the default is 48 hours.
